From Dance to Design: Iris Rusi's Journey at Berghs Bachelor Program
The Berghs Bachelor program combines hands-on learning in Stockholm with the opportunity to study at one of our international partner schools. For Iris, a fall 2024 Bachelor student, it has opened the door to pursuing her passion for design on a global stage.
After completing her semester at Berghs, she’ll head to Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Australia, to further her studies. A move that ties together her passions for storytelling, creativity, and global experiences.
- I come from an international educational background, beginning with first grade in Australia, IB-school in Helsinki, and a high school exchange year in Barcelona. Outside of school, I have a history in modern dance at a world-class level, supported by my performance art studies in middle school. These experiences built my confidence in performance and presentation, and to have fun with it too!, says Iris.
Why Berghs?
After taking a few gap years to work and explore her options, Iris was ready to return to her studies.
- Berghs attracted me as a highly creative and modern school, and the Bachelor program was perfect, since it’s taught in English with broad courses and a seamless transition to further international studies. I’ve always been interested in visual design—photography, editorials, cinematography, and brand identity work—and I love storytelling in all forms. For me, communications was a natural path to combine these passions in a non-traditional way through visual design, says Iris.
The program’s structure, which includes a semester at Berghs followed by two to three years abroad, appealed to her love for international environments.
-During the application process, I became inspired by the idea of studying abroad again. It felt like the perfect next step to grow as a creative and as a person.
From Dance to Design: Creativity Reimagined
Iris’s background in modern dance continues to shape her approach to design and storytelling.
-To me, dancing is about combining something existing in new forms, which is how I define creativity also. In my experience, dance involves combining multiple elements to create a cohesive piece, where each aspect supports the others. While structure and a foundation are essential, there is always room for experimentation and innovation. This reflects in my approach to design, where rules and structures serve as a guide, still with the freedom to experiment and innovate, says Iris.
This mindset has helped Iris navigate the challenges of the program, from collaborative projects to presenting her work in front of peers and instructors. One course in particular left a lasting impression.
-In our ‘Making Your Point’ course, we each prepared a presentation on a subject of our choice. Hearing others present was both deeply interesting and moving at times, as it highlighted that everyone has a unique story to share. Creating a personal presentation was especially meaningful on a level that was new to me, allowing me to apply the skills I had learned in a way that felt fresh and impactful. Presentation day in class also revealed more of our personalities as a group, and I think we all enjoyed seeing each other succeed, says Iris.
The Global Perspective at Berghs
The international aspect of the program has been another highlight for Iris, who thrives in diverse environments.
-The environment of internationality in the program feels familiar, since more than half of my time in schools has been similar. Diversity comes naturally in such spaces and teaches, as cliché as it sounds, that we’re all alike. I love learning about other cultures, which naturally broadens perspective and also makes the dynamic of the group more engaging.
Looking ahead to her time in Perth, she’s excited to continue exploring new cultures and perspectives.
-Returning to Australia feels like a full-circle moment for me, as I was last there as a first grader. I’m excited to relocate, build new routines, meet new people, and of course to live in a city full of beaches by the sea! While studying abroad presents challenges, it feels natural given my background and the life I want to build. It opens doors that a traditional route might not offer, aligning with my professional goal to work internationally or in cross-cultural spaces, says Iris.
Advice for Future Bachelor Students
Reflecting on her experience, Iris encourages future students to embrace the program’s challenges and opportunities.
-Approach with an open and adaptable mindset, both regarding studies and how you’re learning it, as well as the people you meet. Have the courage to be vulnerable at times, since it’s essential for growth. We as Bachelors are a group, but also individuals all with something to bring to the table. Being authentic in your individual work, especially when pitching or presenting, and sharing it with others is highly rewarding.
For Iris, the Berghs Bachelor program has been a stepping stone to a future where creativity and global connections come together.
-Experimental, communal, and courageous. We were encouraged to think creatively, push boundaries, and be experimental, within a supportive environment. Collaboration was key throughout the semester, whether through teamwork or discussions, fostering a strong sense of community. The courage to step outside of your comfort zone was essential—not just before and during the semester, but especially now as I continue my journey abroad, says Iris.
