In an era of rapid change, understanding the future isn't enough—you need to create it. This online course is specifically crafted for creative professionals and strategists in communication and marketing who want to expand their toolkit and actively design future scenarios.

Unlike traditional scenario planning, Design Futures integrates speculative design, design fiction, and hands-on creative methods to envision and prototype tangible futures.

Throughout the course, you'll engage with practical frameworks, methods, and tools that bridge analysis and creativity, empowering you to innovate strategically within your role. You’ll develop a future-focused case relevant to your professional context, positioning you and your organization at the forefront of innovation and strategic foresight.

LESSON 1: Introduction to Futures Thinking – Gain foundational insights into futures thinking, understanding core principles and the significance of proactive future orientation.

LESSON 2: Introduction to Design Futures – Discover the unique intersection of futures thinking and design, emphasizing creativity, imagination, and active shaping of future possibilities.

LESSON 3: Creative Futures Research – Apply design-driven methods to uncover emerging trends, signals, and innovative opportunities.

Lesson 4: Prototyping Possible Futures – Master techniques for rapidly prototyping tangible, actionable, and speculative future concepts.

LESSON 5: Communicating Your Vision – Develop strategies for effectively communicating and embedding your future vision within your organization's culture and strategic
processes.

This course is designed for professionals who seek to expand their ability to strategically and creatively influence the future direction of their organization or brand. It's specifically valuable for individuals in creative roles and strategic communication such as Lead Designers, Senior Creatives, Strategists and Brand Managers, Innovation Leaders, Product Owners, and Entrepreneurs in general looking for methods to innovate and differentiate.

The course will cover a number of methods and tools, from analytical futures and foresight tools, to creative visioning and storytelling.  Some of them are listed below:

  • Horizon Scanning - a process used to monitor early signs of emerging trends
  • Four Horizons - a strategic foresight tool to help manage innovation
  • The Futures Cone - a foresight tool ranging from highly probable to speculative scenarios
  • Four arcs - a strategic foresight model
  • The futures wheel - a tool to explore consequences
  • Axes of uncertainty - a scenario planning technique
  • A/B Manifesto - a conceptual framework contrasting design thinking
  • Diegetic Prototyping - a technique in design fiction
  • Science Fiction Prototyping / immersive scenarios - imaginative storytelling

Between classes, you will work on weekly assignments and share feedback with the instructor and your peers in a dedicated digital classroom (Canvas). Login keys and Zoom links will be provided to all enrolled students one week before the course starts.

Do I need any prior knowledge?

For this course you should possess 3+ years of work experience in creative roles and strategic communication. A good level of English is also required.
