We’re in the experience economy. Your understanding of real human needs and your ability to design for them is critical. This course teaches you how to build products and services based on real-world evidence. Through a series of interactive weekly classes, you learn research, ideation, rapid prototyping, and testing, both on paper and with digital tools. You apply these skills by working solo and by collaborating in remote teams.

This part-time online course runs over 12 weeks. You can expect a weekly workload of approximately 8-10 hours. The course consists of a mix of weekly evening classes, practical project work, feedback, and reading, and it can be attended while working in a full-time job.

Week 1: Course kick-off & Introduction to UX Design

Meet your peers. This week offers you a comprehensive introduction to the course. We dive into the world of product and service design and the relevant design processes. The mindset of curiosity for others is the theme of the week. We explore it and we introduce the first assignment.

Week 2: Warm-up Sprint - Design Thinking and Research

People before pixels. This week introduces you to Design Thinking, a human-centered methodology to understand and solve problems. You learn qualitative and quantitative research methods and you conduct user interviews to uncover hidden user needs.

Week 3: Warm-up sprint  - ideate, prototype, and test

We practice collaborative ideation to generate multiple ideas based on insights. You learn how to use rapid prototyping methods and make ideas tangible, testable, and shareable.

Week 4: Main project: team and discovery

Design is a team sport. We align teams on their vision, expectations, and ways of working. You unpick a complex mission area, map assumptions, and conduct secondary/desk research. This week we introduce the theme for the main project which you will work on for the rest of the course. 

Week 5: Main Project: research and synthesis tools

You learn how to capture and communicate findings and insights from research using key UX artifacts such as stakeholder maps, personas, and journey maps.

Week 6: Main Project: expert interviews

Engaging with experts is a key part of the design process. This week, we invite a subject matter expert - related to the theme of the design brief - to conduct a collaborative interview.

Week 7: Main Project: from problem to solution

Students present their insights and UX artifacts, and receive feedback. Based on these insights students ideate, visualise and prioritise ideas for possible solutions.

Week 8: Main Project: design methods and principles

This week, you get familiar with popular methods and principles to conceptualise and visualise solutions. You learn the fundamentals of information architecture, user flows, and UX/UI patterns.

Week 9: Main Project: low-fi prototyping and lean testing

You learn how to create low-fidelity prototypes, plan and perform user tests, and create test reports.

Week 10: Main Project: hi-fi prototyping with Figma

You turn your lo-fi sketch into prototypes using Figma, laying the groundwork for usability testing with research objectives and discussion guides.

Week 11: Final Presentations

It’s pitch time! All groups present their projects, learn from one another and receive feedback for refinement and portfolio.

Week 12: UX career tracks, portfolio & interview tips

This is an open session for students to shape. Possible topics can be picking the career track that’s right for you, interview tips, professional well-being, and more. The course ends with final project reflections.

You are a young professional with one to five years of experience in design, or related fields such as marketing, product management or entrepreneurship. You are either self-taught and wish to learn methodology and techniques, or are just starting out in UX and want to land your first job or internship as a UX designer.
To complete the course – and all course assignments – you are required to work in Miro and Figma. These tools are free and/or offer free trials. Anyway, to avoid limitations, you might want to plan for a license cost between 15 USD and 30 USD, depending on the subscription plan you choose. This is not included in the course fee. Note that you do not need to activate an account before the course start. Your teacher will guide you through your options at the start of the course.
